Using the result

Measure the elapsed time from the end of one shift to the start of the next. Use it when you want a quick, checkable time or calendar result without turning the calculation into payroll, tax, benefits or legal advice.

Behind the calculation

Duration = end date/time − start date/time. Because both dates are explicit, the tool requires the end to be later than or equal to the start.

A practical example

From August 28 at 5:00 PM to August 29 at 7:00 AM is a 14-hour duration.

Common input mistake

Because the fields contain full dates and times, an end earlier than the start is treated as an input error rather than silently assuming a next-day rollover.

Check it yourself

For an overnight interval, split the manual check at midnight: time to midnight + time after midnight.

Important assumptions

The calculation is a raw duration between timestamps; it does not subtract breaks or classify the interval.

Scope: this calculator handles time, duration, schedule or calendar math only. It does not estimate wages, taxes, overtime eligibility, benefits, legal rights or employer obligations.

Questions about this calculator

Does the Hours Between Shifts Calculator include pay, tax or legal rules?

No. It intentionally stays with time, schedule or calendar arithmetic so the result is not presented as payroll, tax or employment-law advice.

Can I verify the result manually?

Yes. The page explains the formula or counting rule so you can reproduce a small example independently.
