When this tool is useful

Calculate the net length of a shift from start time, end time and break. Use it when you want a quick, checkable time or calendar result without turning the calculation into payroll, tax, benefits or legal advice.

Calculation method

The calculator finds the elapsed time from clock-in to clock-out, treats an earlier clock-out value as the next day, converts the entered break from minutes to hours, and subtracts that break from elapsed time.

Worked example

A shift from 8:15 AM to 5:00 PM spans 8 hours 45 minutes. After a 30-minute break, net time is 8 hours 15 minutes.

Common input mistake

Decide whether you want elapsed shift length or net worked hours. This calculator can deduct a break; the Shift Length Calculator is the better choice when you want only the raw start-to-end span.

How to verify the result

Verify the elapsed span first, then verify the break separately. This two-step check catches most AM/PM and break-entry mistakes.

Assumptions and limits

The result is time arithmetic only. It does not decide whether a break is paid, whether rounding applies, or how any hours should be compensated.

Scope: this calculator handles time, duration, schedule or calendar math only. It does not estimate wages, taxes, overtime eligibility, benefits, legal rights or employer obligations.

Use a single shift as the unit

This page is intended for one shift at a time rather than a weekly card. Enter the shift’s start, end and any break you want removed, then use the result as one schedule block. For a multi-day total, move to the weekly or biweekly tools instead of stacking several shifts mentally.

Questions about this calculator

Does the Shift Hours Calculator include pay, tax or legal rules?

No. It intentionally stays with time, schedule or calendar arithmetic so the result is not presented as payroll, tax or employment-law advice.

What should I do if my shift crosses midnight?

Enter the actual start and end clock times. Clock-based duration tools treat an earlier end clock value as the following day where that behavior is applicable.
